The fifth and final volume of a series of books covering over 1800 surviving medieval castellated buildingsthroughout Ireland, this book is a comprehensive guide to castles, bawns, town defenses and fortified houses in counties Clare, Limerick and Tipperary which form the northern half of the province of Munster.
An introduction describing the development of castellated buildings of stone dating from the beginning of the 13 century until the mid 17th centuryin North Munster is followed by three gazeteersdescribing the history and architecture of 335 such buildings. The gazeteers are illustrated with many plans, drawings and photographs, and there are also two maps showing the locations of surviving buildings. Lists at the ends of the gazeteers give summary information on another 120 buildings of which there are now only minor remains, and there are also lists opf former castles.
