Sally Cavanagh is a simple and natural love story. Sally and Connor's tragedy is due to the combined evils of landlordism and emigration. They are caught up in a crushing system of repression which brings out the worst in those who administer it and something of the best in those who suffer under it. But Sally Cavanagh is far from being a political tract as Charles Kickham knew the human heart very well and his characters live, breathe and laugh as they did over a hundred years ago. It is the story of everyday events and makes us laugh as well as cry.
